Cliff Jumping: Taking a Dive in a Picture Perfect Scenery
Santorini in Greece was the the first time I witnessed such beautiful Mediterranean waters – it was amazingly crystal clear. I haven’t travelled much before my Europe adventures, so this was pretty mind blowing.
One of the best experiences I had here was cliff jumping at this secluded area at Amoudi Bay, which was in north end of Santorini by Qia. It was a bit of a mission to get to this massive rock, but nonetheless part of the experience.
Once you get there, you had to swim a bit to get to the rock. And that was my first challenge… yep, how does one who doesn’t know how to swim even get to the rock to begin with?!
Ruben gave me a super quick impromptu swimming lesson that pretty much reduced my chances of drowning by a whopping, “just hold onto me”. I tried to doggy paddle my way, but apparently I was wasting way too much energy. Eventually, I did have to hold onto Ruben and he swam for the both of us – little did he know how difficult that was. The best part was, everyone there was confused about why I was putting myself in this situation.
The swim over to the rock was probably about 30 feet, but it felt like an eternity. After reaching it, we had to climb our way up to the platform where everyone was jumping off of. It doesn’t look too high from the photo (about 15-20 feet), but it was a pretty high jump looking down.
I still remember the reaction I got when people who were jumping found out that I didn’t know how to swim.
“what the hell are you doing here”
It took me a while to gather up the courage to throw myself down, but of course, I eventually did. The people there were super nice because before it was my turn to jump, there were about 4 people in the water waiting for me, in case there were any signs of me drowning.
I don’t regret this experience at all, but I must say, I’m not sure if I’d want to throw myself off a cliff again anytime soon.
If you plan to make a trip to Santorini and are interested in take a dive, let me know and I’ll be more than happy to give you detailed instructions on how to find this beautiful hiding place!
